The week started with dropping off the car for some service. The tires were bald and we finally decided to cough up enough money to fix our horribly cracked windshield. So the mechanic took the Corolla and I tried to not feel stranded in Kokomo during the day. I was able to get the car back with enough time to race home for swim classes. [last swim classes -- both girls loved them and want to repeat it!]

The kids spent the first week of fall break playing imagination games (aka octowater), reading to no end, and watching a few movies from the library while I worked. They played nicely together more often than not.

We had a few events as well: teddy bear sleepover at the library, which all three thought was funny; campfire story time with smores and umbrellas because it rained; a visit to an art exhibit and local bakery; and birthday preparations.

We spent Paela's birthday visiting the haunted house at the children's museum (thanks to the library for free passes!), though she declared it not as good as last year's. We also went to a pizza buffet, per her request, and had Anne's chicken (er, just the rice...) as well. She wanted a ghost cake because she embraces the Halloween theme for her birthday nowadays. And she requested a different birthday song for the candles, so we obliged. The girl has definite ideas of how she wants things. She felt the love with presents and cards as well.

The girls practiced cross-stitching and cooking and piano and swimming as well. Aderyn learned to swing, pumping by herself, and was so proud that she went out every time she remembered. Paela took an unfortunate spill off her bike, and though it slowed her a bit she still got many of her cleaning chores done so she would have less work on her birthday.

This week we look forward to more time off with a few play dates with friends. We'll see what other mischief we manage to find for ourselves as well! We are loving the fall break.

I was sick for most of Thursday and fell behind on grading. I had intended to catch up on Saturday, but we kept pretty busy with home projects throughout the day. So now I have to sheepishly tell my students on Monday morning that I'm not quite done with all their grades so they will get extra time to turn in their redo.

We decided to sign Paela up for swim class this fall. A friend of mine taught the kids over the summer, which was awesome, and then Paela cited swimming as her favorite sport. This is a far cry from the days when we had to determine a reward system for participation in swim class. So I thought I'd look into formal swim class again and see how that goes. Saturday morning we headed to the pool for an evaluation, so they could place her in a class.

Our neighborhood held a neighborhood-wide garage sale yesterday, so we thought why not stick a table out because: free advertising? In theory this was a good idea, except that it rained all morning long. Well, at least our garage was clean enough to have a table set up in the garage, but attendance was poor. I think we sold $4 of stuff. Probably not something we'll spend time on again.

BUT! The kids wanted to wander some of the other garage sales, so we took umbrellas and went for a walk. Paela bought herself some crocs [ugh], Torben bought himself a truck, and Aderyn scored a pair of roller skates in just her size for a dollar. And they all love them, but Aderyn in particular has practically lived in her skates since she got them. She is getting faster and falling only every other house now, and is super glad for the knee pads and elbow pads she got for her birthday awhile back.
